Wlliam Thomas Rayner was born on 22 March 1889 to Charles and Catherine Rayner. On some records his name is spelt Raynor but on his hand written Attestation papers it is Rayner. His birth is registered in Maclean but the family lived on a farming property they called Cambridge Park on Woodford Island, not far from Maclean but closer to the small village of Tyndale on the opposite (south) bank of the South Arm of the Clarence River.
The Rayner chilkdren attended Tyndale Public School and travelled to school on horseback and then across the river on a small boat until a public ferry was operating from about 1900.
William enlisted at Liverpool on 4 April 1915 at age 26. He was 170 cm tall, weighed 66 kg, had a fair complexion, grey eyes and dark brown hair. He gave his occupation as a farmer. He embarked from Sydney on 7 June 1915 on HMAT Chilka with the 7th Reinforcements for the 6th Australian Light Horse Regiment. He was taken on strenth of his regiment on 25 October 1915 at Gallipoli.
William was wounded in the buttocks and right thigh when in an advanced trench at Chatham's, Gallipoli, and taken on board the hospital ship HS Neuralia on the same day on 9 November 1915. He died of his wounds on 11 November 1915 and was buried at sea "just off Rhodes Island" (Rhode Island - Rhodes). His name is inscribed on the Lone Pine Memorial at Gallipoli and also on Honor Rolls in the Tyndale Hall, Clarence Street, Brushgrove, NSW.
