Thomas Walker Gourley was born in Paisley, Scotland in 1888. He had previously served with the 2nd Volunteer Battalion in Argyllshire. Thomas enlisted in Fremantle on the 7.3.16, aged 28 years 1 month. He was a labourer and Presbyterian. He initially listed his father in Paisley as his next of kin, but this was changed to his wife Lucy Gourley (née Martin) of 29 Price St, Fremantle. He was allocated service number 2618. initially he was a Private with the 32nd Battalion. Thomas was described as being 5 feet 7 inches tall, with a chest measurement of 35-40 inches, fair complexion, blue eyes and light brown hair. He attended musketry school from 8.7.16 until 20.7.16 and embarked at Fremantle on the HMAT Suffolk A23 on 10.10 16. Thomas was promoted to EDP Cpl on the 4.12.16 with the 13th Training Battalion, then transferred to 51st Battalion on 6.4.17. On 26.7.17 he was promoted to Corporal. On the 13.9.17 he was accidently injured in the right knee during training – not his fault. He was transferred to England and admitted to 1st South General Hospital at Moneyhull on 8.10.17. On the 4.12.17, he was AWL for 6 hours and forfeited 3 days’ pay. He returned to France on 27.12.17.  He went to hospital sick on 6.1.18 for four days, then was wounded in action on 22.5.18 and discharged from hospital on 15.6.18. He was wounded a second time on the 29.7.18. Thomas was invalided to the UK and the University War Hospital on 2.8.18 with gunshot wounds to his left arm and right leg. He returned to Australia on the 6.11.18 per D27, Marathon, disembarked on the 24.12.18 and was discharged on the 8.2.19. Thomas died in Fremantle on the 11.1.1958 aged 70. He is memorialised at Karrakatta Crematorium Rose Garden G position 0146 and was a later addition to the Scots Church board.
