Pte Montgomery, James Alexander (1895–1915)
James Alexander Montgomery was born at Fernacussog, Drouin, Victoria, on 29th September, 1895, the son of Mr. J. R. and Mrs. M. Montgomery. He received his education principally at the Tahara (Victoria) State School. On 11th March, 1914, he entered the Bank's service at the Bathurst Street Branch, Sydney. On 3rd February, 1914, prior to the expiration of his probationary period, he had been transferred to Goulburn. On 24th August, 1914, he was sent to Crookwell.

James Alexander Montgomery enlisted as a private in the 4th Reinforcements of the 2nd Battalion of the A.I.F. on 3rd November, 1914, and was subsequently promoted to the rank of corporal. He saw service at Gallipoli, and took part in the Battle of Lone Pine, where he received a gunshot wound in the head on 7th August, 1915, from the effects of which he died four days later. He was mentioned in despatches by Sir Ian Hamilton on 11th December, 1915, for gallant and distinguished service in the field.
