Phillip James BAYLISS was born on 6th March, 1883 in Wanganella, New South Wales
His parents were Phillip BAYLISS & Matilda Mary SYMONS
He married Evelyn Harriet LLEWELLYN in Deniliquin in 1908 - divorced in 1924
He first served in the Boer War (SN 2795) for 15 months with the NSW Mounted Infantry & the 17th Light Horse, embarking from Sydney on 15th March, 1901 on the ship SS Maplemore and returning to Australia on 4th June, 1902
On 28th February, 1915 he enlisted for WW1 as a Second Lieutenant and embarked from Sydney on 28th January, 1916 on the ship Themistocles with the 4th Light Horse Regiment, 14th Reinforcements - he was appointed Second Lieutenant on 15th July, 1915
He was promoted to Lieutenant on 18th March, 1916 and transferred to 1st Australian Division Cyclist Corps on 20th March, 1916 - for further details see information under his photo from the Australian War Memorial
Philllip returned to Australia on 30th October, 1919 and was discharged from duty on 26th February, 1920
He died in Deniliquin in 1938 and is buried in Deniliquin Cemetery

His brother George Walter BAYLISS (SN 3270) also served in the Boer War and later served in WW1 (SN 1946) & was discharged in 1919
Two of his sons served in WW2
1. Leighton Llewellyn BAYLISS (SN VX3382) was killed in action in Crete on 20th September, 1941
2. Phillip Arthur BAYLISS ( SN 377638) & ( SN VX66675) - discharged in 1945
