Charles was the second of three children of Frederick (Fred) Makings (born 1867 in Lincolnshire, England) and Mary Jane Ridsdale (born 1864 in Ipswich, QLD). In 1888 Fred arrived in Brisbane, QLD on board the Waroonga. He was a Labourer in Ipswich, QLD in 1890 when he married Mary. Fred and Mary lived at Freestone Creek on the Darling Downs in QLD where Fred worked as a Labourer. Their three children were born there, and following Mary's death in 1904, Fred relocated to Peacock Creek at Bonalbo near Tenterfield in NSW where he was a Grazier.
In 1915 Charles was a Farmer at Peacock Creek when he enlisted in the AIF. He served as a Private (Service No:2650) with 9th and 49th Infantry Battalions. Charles was hospitalised with measles in Cairo in October 1915, and was WiA at Pozieres in France in September 1916. Charles was 18 years of age when he enlisted, and in his letter of consent Fred wrote 'I hereby give it (consent) willingly, as we must protect our country and help our allies' (National Archives Australia). Charles was Discharged in September 1917. Brother Frederick George (Private, Service No:7509) also served in WWI. Charles also served in the CMF in WWII (Private, Service No:N457496) with 2 Battalion Volunteer Defence Corps.
In 1921 Charles was a Farmer at Bonalbo via Tenterfield, NSW when he married Cecilia Jane McNamara (born 1902 in Grafton, NSW) at Murwillumbah, NSW. By 1937 the family had moved to Baryulgil near Coff's Harbour in NSW - a small rural town on the Clarence River where the main industries were asbestos mining and agriculture. Charles was an Inspector there until he retired in 1965. Charles died in 1978 and Cecilia died in 1993.
