William Martin CHEEK was born in Evandale, Tasmania on 9th April, 1897

His parents were John William CHEEK and Lydia WALKER

He had previous service with the senior cadets, 12th Battalion, F Company before he enlisted in Claremont Tasmania on 23rd August, 1915 - he embarked on the 24th November, 1915 with the 12th Infantry Battalion, 12th reinforcements on the Orontes

William died of wounds on 27th July, 1916 at Pozieres in France and is buried in Caterpillar Valley Cemetery

The inscription reads:

"BELOVED SON OF J.W. & L. CHEEK OF EVANDALE TASMANIA"
