Kincumber
Resident
Dies At 72
Mr Charles Andrew Hughes, a well-known resident of Kincumber South, died in the Military Hospital, Turramurra, on Friday. He was 72. He had been in hospital for 18 months. Mr Hughes, who served with the 18th Battalion, 1st AIF, had lived at Kincumber South for 17 years. In 1898, when Mr Hughes was only 16 he planned to sail in the ill-fated  Maitland. At the last moment, his father refused to sign the papers, and the ship sailed without him. Within a few days, the ship was totally wrecked off the coast near New  Grounds. A bachelor, Mr Hughes leaves one brother, Anthony, of Five Dock.
The funeral left on Monday for Rookwood Cemetery.
