Andrew Milton

Born in Brunswick VIC on 20 Jul 1930

He had been employed as a Workshop Assistant with CSIROs Government Research Lab in Melbourne & Storeman with Gardinol Chemical Company in Hawthorn

At age 21 he enlisted in the Army in Sep 1951 & was allocated as Infantryman for service with Special Force Korea

He posted to 2nd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment in Dec

He arrived in Japan in Apr 1952 then Korea in Jun where he posted to 3 RAR

In the period from Nov 1951 to the Armistice in Jul 1953, 3 RAR occupied various positions in 'Jamestown Line' between 'The Hook' & Point 355 with brief periods in Brigade & Corps reserve. The role of the unit had become one of defence; the holding of a strong defensive line extending across Korea just north of the 38th Parallel

He returned to Japan in Mar 1953 & Australia in Jul where he was discharged on the 19th

He re-enlisted in the ARA in Aug 1954 & was allocated to the Royal Australian Corps of Signals for service with Southern Command

He arrived back in Japan in Jun 1956 & posted to Commonwealth Contingent Korea, Signal Squadron serving in Korea from 26 Jun 1956 to 2 Aug 1957

He returned to Australia in Aug 1957 posting to 1st Brigade Sig Squadron in Sep

Appt L/CPL in Jan 1958 he posted to the School of Signals as Staff in Apr

In Dec 1959 he qualified as a DUKW Transport Operator

He posted to Northern Command Intercommunication Troop in Aug 1959; 1st Armoured Regiment Sig Troop in May 1960 & Southern Command Sig Squadron in Aug then promoted CPL in Apr 1963

In Dec 1964 S/C Sig Sqn was re-designated as 2nd Signals Regiment

Posting to 709 Sig Tp in May 1965 he arrive in Bein Hoa for service in South Vietnam in support of 1 RAR Group until 27 Aug when he was medevacked to Malaysia & subsequently back to Australia by Sep

He returned to Vietnam in Apr 1966 with 709 Sig Tp transferring to 520 (Tech Maint) Sig Tp as A/SGT in Jul

He returned to Australia in May 1967 posting to 5 Sig Regt

In Jan 1968 was dett to Port Moresby with 127 Sig Sqn at Vanimo Barracks

Sadly, on 29 Sep 1969 he was found to have commit suicide in an empty shed at his Barracks in Vanimo
