Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Sergeant William Bailey was badly wounded in both hips, shoulder and ear during the attack on Hill 971 on 8 August 1915. He pretended to be dead and his boots, puttees, papers and money belt were taken. He was then picked up by a Red Crescent attendant and carried down a hillside to a Turkish Field Hospital. Initially reported wounded and missing he was confirmed as a prisoner of war of the Turks being held in Constantinople. He spent time at many different POW camps over the next 3 years and was eventually repatriated to England in December 1918. He returned to Australia during August 1919.
