War Service/Promotions: 2nd Lieutenant 16 July 1915. Lieutenant 1 January 1916. He was promoted to Captain at the Front on 12 April 1916. Appointed Temporary Major, 10 November 1917, whilst commanding 1st Australian Tunnelling Company, when commanding officer Major James Douglas Henry was evacuated sick to England. Promotion to Major not commissioned until 1 October 1918, as no provisions had been made for position of Adjutant, or temporary ranks in the Mining Corps. He was granted leave without pay between 21 June 1919 and 28 July 1919. Also granted leave with pay between 29 July 1919 and 31 October 1919, so that he could attend Steel Works, Bolchow & Vaughan & Co., South Bank, Yorkshire, England. (It was the largest iron-making and mining company in Great Britain at time).
Fate: Returned to Australia per SS Ypiringa, 15 November 1919. Before the war he married
(1) Clara Loane Chapman, 29 July 1915, St John's Church, Corowa, NSW. They divorced in 1926. He married (2) Kathleen Lloyd King, 1941, NSW.
