Sapper John Nairn (Service No:9564) enlisted in the AIF on 5 July 1917 as a Private attached to 9/3 Pioneer Battalion. Sapper Nairn was attached to 2nd Tunnelling Coy on 28 February 1918 when he embarked with his Unit from Melbourne for Liverpool on board HMAT A71 Nestor. Sapper Nairn served in France, and embarked from England for Melbourne on 22 August 1919 on board HT Anchises. He was attached to 2nd Tunnelling Coy at Discharge on 7 December 1919. Older brother Alex was KiA in WWI.

John was born in Buangor, Victoria in 1890, fourth of seven children of John Alexander Nairn (b1860 in Linton, Victoria) and Elizabeth Jane Austin (b1867 in Ouyen, Victoria). John Snr (a Farmer) and Elizabeth  married in 1884 in Ouyen, and settled in Buangor where they raised their family and John Snr was a Farmer until his death in 1919.

John started work as a Farm Hand at Woomelang, and was a Share Farmer at Birchip in 1914 before settling in Buangor, where he was a Farmer when he enlisted in the AIF in 1917. In 1922 in Ouyen, John married Hilda Louisa Dorothy Harmer (b1898 in Hopetoun, Victoria. 'Returning from the War he devoted himself to the development of his farming property near Ouyen, and made it one of the best improved farms in the district' (Trove: 1929). John and Hilda settled at Ouyen, where they raised their family and John was a Farmer, and was involved in the Ouyen Agricultural Club, the Race Club and in fallow and crop competitions, both as a competitor and judge. John died in 1929, leaving four children (three sons and a daughter) under the age of seven. Hilda died in 1987.
