Eldest of the three brothers (Thomas, Arnold and Albert) who served in the Army, Private Thomas Pickering (Service No:4766) enlisted in the AIF on 1 October 1915 and was attached to 23rd and 19th Depot Battalions. On 7 March 1916 Private Pickering was attached to 22nd Infantry Battalion when he embarked with his Unit from Melbourne on board HMAT A18 Wiltshire for service on the Western Front. Private Pickering transferred to 2nd Machine Gun Battalion on 20 March 1918 in France, and embarked from England for Melbourne on 20 May 1919 on board HT Nestor. Private Pickering was attached to 2nd Machine Gun Battalion at Discharge on 20 November 1919. His only son Maxwell Thomas Pickering (Private; Service No:VX501856) served in the AIF post WWII (1946 - 1948).
Thomas was born at Fyan's Creek via Stawell, Victoria in 1893, second of eleven children of Joshua (Joss) Charles Pickering (b1858 in Stawell, Victoria) and his second wife Agnes Eliza Thompson (b1872 in Stawell, Victoria). Joss (a Widower with four children) and Agnes married in 1899 in Stawell, and settled in the Stawell district (Fyan's Creek and Boroka) where they raised their family and Joss was a Farmer.
Thomas was a Labourer at Fyan's Creek via Stawell in 1915 when he enlisted in the AIF. Following his Discharge, Thomas returned to Fyan's Creek and worked as a Labourer. In 1923 in Stawell he married Myrtle Davenport Woolley (b1903 in Stawell, Victoria). The couple lived at Fyan's Creek before settling in Stawell, where they raised their family and Thomas worked as a Labourer. Thomas died in 1972 and Myrtle died in 1991.
