Biography contributed by Saint Ignatius' College

John James Farrelly lived on Gordon Road, Prospect, South Australia and was a labourer by trade. He was a Roman Catholic and liked to pray at his local church. He enlisted into the A.I.F at 36 years of age and as a Private. Just like many other soldiers in South Australia, John James was a part of the 10th battalion. After he enlisted on the 1st of September 1915, he got married to Mabel Emma Lois Pugh in 1918 when he was 39, meaning he was still at war when he made the commitment to Mabel. They lived in England at 176 Villa Street, Birmingham.

After training, John embarked for France onboard the HMAT A28 Miltiades on the 7th February 1916. He went initially to Egypt and spent several months there (including a bout of tonsillitis). In August 1916 he sailed to England and in November was detached to serve with the Military Police. He stayed with them throughout 1917 and joined up with the 10th Battalion in France on 2nd January 1918. On 30th May 1918 he was wounded in action, suffering a fractured arm. This caused him to be evacuated to England. He never recovered fit for action and on 15th September 1918 embakred for Australia and discharge from the AIF.

John James Farrelly was discharged on the 6th of March 1919.
