Biographical details:
Henry Evans was the son of Charles and Matilda Evans He trained with B Company at Mitcham from 2 April to 16 April 1917, prior to embarking with his unit from Adelaide on board HMAT A30 Borda on 23 June 1917. He joined the 8th Training Battalion at Hurdcott, England on 26 August. His unit, the 48th Battalion,were sent from Southampton to France on 28 January 1918. Henry was transferred to England on 6 May to undergo an inspection by the Medical Board. He was diagnosed to be suffering acute scoliosis and cordosis – inward curvature of the spine, and was consequently returned to Australia on the Essex on 7 June and was discharged as medically unfit for duty on 17 August 1918(1).
Fruit Block Details:
Henry Herbert Evans occupied Block 392 of 14.5 acres on 1 February 1922 and Block 716 of 11 acres at 43 Carlyon Road on 1 April 1925. Herbert complained to the Royal Commission on the Soldier-Settler Scheme, that the house built on his block far exceeded the value of which it had been assessed (2).
Henry died on 22 October 1962, aged 78(3).
