Died on this date – 11th January.... Driver Leslie Edward John Hobbs was born in 1897. (According to information supplied by his mother – his place of birth was Somerset, Tasmania, however Leslie Hobbs stated on his Attestation Papers that he was born at Somerset, Devon, England.)

Leslie John Hobbs enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 30th November, 1914 as an 18 year old Engine Driver from Ulverstone, Tasmania.
Gunner Hobbs embarked from Sydney on HMAT Hymettus (A1) on 8th February, 1915 with the 3rd Field Artillery Brigade, 2nd Reinforcements & disembarked at Alexandria, Egypt on 16th March, 1915.

Gunner Hobbs was transferred to Gallipoli Peninsula on 3rd August, 1915. He was sent sick to Hospital on 11th October, 1915 the transferred to Malta. Gunner Hobbs was transferred to England on Hospital Ship Braemar Castle & admitted to Beaufort War Hospital, Bristol, England on 4th November, 1915. He returned to France on 18th April, 1916.

Gunner Hobbs was mustered as Driver on 21st November, 1916. He was sent sick to Hopsital on 30th December, 1916 with Scabies & rejoined his Unit on 18th January, 1917. Driver Hobbs was admitted again to Hospital on 30th January, 1917 with Scabies & rejoined his Unit on 16th February, 1917.

Driver Hobbs was admitted to the Military Hospital, Bulford, Wiltshire on 12th September, 1917 with ______ & transferred to Convalescent Training Depot at Parkhouse, Wiltshire on 18th October, 1917.
Driver Hobbs was sent sick to Sutton Veny Hospital on 2nd January, 1918 & admitted to Military Hospital, Sutton Veny, Wiltshire on 3rd January, 1918 with Erysipelas (bacterial infection of upper layer of skin).
Driver Leslie Edward John Hobbs died on 11th January, 1918 at Military Hospital, Sutton Veny, Wiltshire from Erysipelas & Broncho Pneumonia. He was buried in All Saints Churchyard, Idmiston, near Salisbury, Wiltshire after a Private Burial which would have been organised by Driver Hobbs’ uncle who lived at Gomeldon (less than 2 miles from Idmiston).

NOTE: I advised the CWGC in February, 2016 that the date of death on the CWGC Headstone for Driver Hobbs was incorrect. On researching for today’s “Died on this Date” I have found that the headstone has been replaced. My research will be updated on the website in the next few days to include this new headstone photo.
