Prior to enlisting in the AIF, Guy Berry was an orchardist and a Sergeant in the 21st Engineers Signal Troop of the militia, so it followed that he joined a similar unit in the AIF. He was initially knocked back on medical grounds because of heart trouble following typhoid fever. On enlistment he was sent to a Signal School and then joined reinforcements for the 2nd Divisional Signal Company.
On 15 September 1917 he had finally reached the 2nd Divisional Signal section in Belgium. On 4 October he suffered severe wounds to the right knee and chest. He went via the 3rd Australian Field Ambulance to the 3rd Canadian Casualty Clearing Station, where he died the same day.
His younger brother 3269 Pte. Geoffrey Berry 38th Battalion AIF also died of wounds, at Proyart in France, 11 August 1918, aged 19.
They were the sons of Guy and Kate Emily Berry, of Seville, Victoria.
