Sergeant William was awarded the Military Medal and Distinguished Conduct Medal for two specific acts of courage, the MM for his efforts at Zonnebeke in Belgium on 26 September 1917 when he went out into the protective artillery barrage and brought in a badly wounded officer, as well as being in charge of a Lewis Gun team which he handled brilliantly. His DCM was for his work near Morcourt on 8 August 1918, when he crept around the flank of a machine gun post with a small party and bombed it, capturing or killing the entire garrison. He then defended the position against a heavy German counter attack and drove the attackers off, inflicting heavy casualties. Sergeant Murray was discharged in England on the 2 August 1919.
