Son of Edwin Stuart Hickey and Mary Ann Hickey of Lane Cove Road, Pymble, NSW

Served a three year apprenticeship with Ackaland & Platt of Castlereagh Street, Sydney, NSW

During July 1916 while serving with the 54th Battalion he was recommended for the Distinguished Conduct Medal but it wasn't awarded

Commenced return to Australia on 19 February 1919 aboard HT Orca disembarking on 9 April 1919
