George Ernest Walter JONES (Service Number 79) was born on 25th August 1888 at Witley, Surrey, England. He began working for the NSW Tramways as a casual conductor, after the declaration of the war, on 27th August 1914. He wasreleased from duty to join the Expeditionary Forces on 11th May 1915.
He enlisted at Liverpool, at first giving his mother in Surrey as his next of kin. This was later changed to a brother who was serving in the Queens Royal West Surrey Regiment, which was attached to the Egyptian Expeditionary Force.
Jones left Australia aboard HMAT ‘Ceramic’ on 25th June 1915. He was allotted to the 19th Australian Infantry Battalion. He proceeded to join the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force on Gallipoli on 18th August 1915.
Jones left Gallipoli via Mudros (on the Greek island of Lemnos) with the general evacuation in December 1915. He reached Egypt at Alexandria on 7th January 1916. Two months later he travelled through that port again on his way through Marseilles to join the British Expeditionary Forces in France.
He was killed in action on 16th September 1916. He was buried in the Railway Dug-outs Burial Ground 1½ miles SSE of Ypres, Belgium.
