Son of Lawrence M. Vale and Emily J. Vale of Dunmore Street, Bexley, NSW. 

Prior to enlisting he had been employed for over two years as a Brass Finisher with John Dauks & Sons.

Commenced return to Australia on 8 July 1919 aboard HT Friedrichsruh disembarking on 4 September 1919
