Of the 118 McDonnells listed on the National Australian Archives records, only
2 bear any resemblance to the Jack McDonnell appearing on the Roseworthy
Honour Roll for World War One.
Upon completion of basic training, John embarked RMS Malwa at Adelaide on
2 December 1915. In early 1916 he was sent to France with his unit. On 6
August John was wounded in action and was able to rejoin his battalion on 1
October. John was attached to 4th Division Traffic from 27 April 1918, serving
there until the cessation of hostilities. He returned to Australia per
Commonwealth on 13 April 1919,disembarking in Adelaide on 6 June and was
discharged on 29 July.
Leo John McDonnell [John Les McDonnell according to the S.A. Births Index of
Registrations] service number 515810, was born on 18 April 1897 at Bowden –
on-Hill [Ovingham]. The former clerk enlisted in Adelaide on 5 November
1918, giving his mother Margaret McDonnell as next of kin and his religion as
Roman Catholic. Leo John McDonnell was discharged as a Private on 24
December 1918 due to the cessation of hostilities.
