John was conscripted 1 May 1968, did his Recruit Training at 3 Training Battalion. On 7 July 1968 he was transferred to 5 RAR where he did his Corps Training, after completing Corps Training he joined Alpha Company as a clerk. John then joined 7 Section, 3 Platoon as a rifleman. John served for the full Tour of Duty with the Battalion and returned to Australia aboard HMAS Sydney.
