Served during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.
82 years ago today, on the Monday afternoon of the 5th April 1943, Private Squire Roberts, Army Service Corps Details (4th Battalion, Reg No-66058), miner from 18 Kilgour Avenue, Merewether, New South Wales, father of five, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 63. ANGLICAN 3-164. 27.
Born at Clayton, Lancashire, England on the 3rd September 1879 to Benjamin and Anne Roberts; husband of Emily (Emma) Roberts nee Oxley, married 1899, Newcastle, N.S.W., died 7.10.1949, Wallsend, N.S.W., as Emma, age 70, sleeping here, Squire enlisted on the 11th June 1918 with the 16th to 27th (NSW) Reinforcements at Newcastle, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A41 Bakara on the 4th September 1918.
Disembarked England 14.11.1918.
Commenced return to Australia 23.7.1919.
Squire arrived home on the 10th September 1919, being discharged on the 26th September 1919.
Did not serve in a theatre of war, therefore was not granted Victory Medal.
Mr. Roberts name has been inscribed on the Junction Soldiers' Monument.
I have placed poppies at Squire’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
Not officially commemorated.
Two brothers also served 1st A.I.F., names not located.
