Son of Thomas Oakley and Emma Sophia Oakley nee Ashton of Lava Street, Warrnambool, Victoria.

Brother of Leonard Ashton Oakley who returned to Australia on 15 May 1919 having served with the 59th Battalion.

Prior to enlisting Leslie had been employed with Nestle & Anglo-Swiss Condensed Milk Company of Dennington, Victoria

During 1910c Leslie married Gertrude Grace Donnithorne of Elizabeth Street, Kensington, Victoria

Commenced return to Australia on 19 January 1916 aboard HT Star of Victoria disembarking on 29 February 1916
