Son of Henry O'Brien and Agnes Gremell O'Brien of Temora Brewery, Temora, NSW.

On 2 May 1919 Luke married Lily Mitchell in Registry Office, St. Giles, Holborn, London, England. Registrar P.H. Durrant officiated.

Commenced return to Australia on 8 August 1919 aboard HT Katoomba disembarking on 25 September 1919
