On the 24 July 1917, 2nd Lt. Alan Barrington Hill of the 29th Squadron RFC was shot down when piloting a Nieuport Scout and captured by the Germans. Hill, from Warren NSW, had served in the 5th FAB AIF and had been transferred to the RFC on 16 March 1917. He was repatriated to England during December 1918 and returned safely to Australia during 1919. He also served with much distinction at Flying Schools with the rank of Squadron Leader during WW2 in the RAAF.
