Great nephew of John Harold Parkerr
Private John Harold Parker was the older brother to my grandmother Bessie Parker from Avoca , Tasmania. Bessie parker was the mother to my late father John Charles Dillon and I am the eldest son of John Dillon, Michael Dillon.
My grandmother held onto to the framed portrait of her brother in her loungeroom in her residence at 30 Tucker Avenue , Port Melbourne. Bessie moved to Melbourne from Tasmania, where she later married my Grandfather, Charles Dillon who came to Australia from Ireland in 1922. She told the story about how her brother John enlisted at the outbreak of the First World War.
My Great Uncle served at Gallipoli in the infantry where he survived his time until the withdrawal of the ANZACs in December 1915. My grandmother explained that he did not wish to return to Australia because he wanted to stay with his mates. In this way, he served on the Western Front with the Australian Infantry division as part of the famous Battle of the Somme and then the Mouquet Farm Battle. He was killed around August 19 -22, 1916. I decided to follow up with his portrait as shown on your website, by providing the Australian War Memorial website with more of his details including the famous portrait.
