Private John Toogood (Service No:1148) enlisted in the AIF on 17 July 1915 in the Victorian naval Unit before transferring to 30th Infantry Battalion on 1 September 1915. Private Toogood embarked from Sydney for Egypt on 9 November 1915 on board HMAT A72 Beltana, and was invalided from Suez for the RTA on 12 April 1916 on board HS Karoola. Private Toogood was Discharged on 1 January 1917 suffering from disease of the spinal cord. Siblings Thomas, Stephen and Richard also served in WWI.

Born in Nunuawading in Melbourne, Victoria in 1890, Jack was fifth of eight children of Henry Toogood (b 1846 in Nunuawading, Melbourne, Victoria) and Mary McKean (b1857 in Nunawading, Melbourne, Victoria). Henry (a Labourer) and Mary married in 1881 in Melbourne where they raised their family. Henry worked as a Labourer and Carter until his death in 1901.

In 1910 Jack was an Able Seaman in the Navy when he deserted from HMS Psyche in Sydney, and was working in Melbourne as a Potter in 1915 when he enlisted in the AIF. Following his Discharge, Jack worked in Melbourne as a Potter and Labourer, and in 1921 married Annie May Craig (b1899 in Melbourne, Victoria). Jack died in 1924 and Annie remarried.
