William was the son of William and Charlotte Mackereth [nee Baudick]. With
his unit, William left Adelaide on RWS Malwa on 2 December 1915. After
initially participating in further training and serving in Egypt, he was sent to
France where on 27 November 1916, he suffered a compound fracture of his
left ankle and a wound to his left elbow and was classified as “dangerously ill”.
Consequently, William was evacuated to hospital in the Havre three days
later. He returned to Australia on A 38 Ulysses on 10 September 1917 and was
discharged as medically unfit on 10 December.
