Driver Charles O'Ryan (Service No:32628) enlisted in the AIF on 30 September 1916 and was a Gunner attached to 15th Field Artillery Brigade on 14 February 1917 when he embarked with his Unit from Melbourne for Plymouth on board RMS Osterley. Driver O'Ryan served in France with 8th Field Artillery Brgade and embarked from England for Melbourne on 3 July 1919 on board Prinz Hubertus. Driver O'Ryan was attached to 8th Field Artillery Brgade at Discharge on 8 November 1919.
Charles was born Melbourne, Victoria in 1896, youngest of six children of Francis Edmund O'Ryan (b1856 in Geelong, Victoria) and Mary Ann Hummerston (b1863 in Tasmania). Francis and Mary married in 1883 in Melbourne, where they settled and raised their family and Francis was a Labourer with Cameron's Tobacco Factory. Francis died in 1906 and Mary in 1909.
Charles was a Machine Worker in Melbourne and served in the Militia before enlisting in the AIF in 1916. Following his Discharge in 1919, Charles was an Iron Worker in Melbourne in 1920 when he married Nancy Conquit (b1898 in Wodonga, Victoria). Charles and Nancy settled in Melbourne, where they raised their family and Charles worked as a Labourer and Fitter. Charles died in 1962 and Nancy in 1974.
