Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

His brother 3455 Pte. Harry Turner also of the 53rd Battalion AIF was also killed in action 19 July, 1916. Both boys enlisted in the 3rd Battalion during August 1915 and both transferred to the 53rd Battalion in Egypt during the reorganisation of the AIF early 1916.

Arthur was 19 years old when he embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board HMAT A14 Euripides on 2nd November 1915. He was an electrician and gave his address as same as his father in Petersham NSW. He was still 19 when he died.

A witness to his death, 3396 Pte. Patrick O’Malley stated “I saw Arthur Turner killed in the attack at Fleurbaix, on July 19th 1916. He was hit in No Man’s Land (by a bullet I think) at about 6pm. He fell forward and I went over ahead and had a look at him. I am sure he was dead.”

Another witness, 2553 Private A. Abbies stated “A. Turner and H. Turner, were reported killed in action after an enquiry had been held on July 21st, some men who came in swore to having seen their dead bodies in No Man’s Land. They were brothers and belonged to X111 platoon, C Company.”

His death was not confirmed until September 1917, as killed in action 19 July 1916. In February 1918 his identity disc was returned to his parents.
