Biography contributed by Paul Lemar

Reginald Shane SHEPHERD was born in Victoria in 1891 to William (1846-1923) and Mary Ann SHEPHERD nee FINDLEY (1849-1926).

Reginald Shane SHEPHERD joined the AIF on 07.02.1916 and was allocated service number 6290.   He was attached to the 24th Infantry Battalion.

It appears his military service did not get off to a good start with a number of illnesses and was arrested in 1917 for desertion in Victoria.   He was later returned to his battalion.

Pte SHEPHERD embarked with his battalion for overseas service on 21.11.1917 travelling via Egypt to France and served on the western front.   He would have been involved in the major battles of Hamel and Amiens and then the 24th Battalion took a major role in the battles to take the German stronghold of Mont St Quentin.

On 16.05.1918 he was listed as being wounded in action having been gassed.

He returned to Australia in April 1919 and was discharged.
