John was the son of John Ayre Vickery HAYNES & Sarah Maria “Blanche” SEDGEBEAR and was born on the 31st of December 1883 in Birkenhead, England.

It is not known when he immigrated to South Australia, but we know he was a painter.

John met a young lady, Miss Florence Victoria WILLIAMS and he fathered her child; Ethel Levinnia WILLIAMS, who was born on the 14th of March 1917 in Enfield.

By the following year he was living in Pt Pirie.

At the age of 29, John enlisted into the 1st AIF on the 27th of May 1918 in Pt Pirie and allotted the service number 62170 and posted to B Company, 2nd Depot Battalion.
He was then transferred to the 4th General Reinforcements and embarked from Adelaide on board SS Gaika on the 6th of August 1918.

John embarked from England on board HT Ulysses on the 22nd of July 1919, disembarking in Adelaide on the 30th of August.

John was discharged from the AIF on the 16th of September 1919.

John married Marguerite FOSTER on the 29th of April 1921 in the Methodist Parsonage, Kent Terrace, Kent Town, SA.
Marguerite was the daughter of Albert Ernest Joshua FOSTER & Margaret RUSSELL and was born on the 2nd of December 1894 in Penfield, SA.
Marguerite was 2 months pregnant when they married.

They welcomed their first child; Kenneth John, on the 29th of November 1921 and John joined the Norwood RSL Sub-Branch.

By 1919 John had deserted Marguerite & Kenneth and they went to live with her parents at 13a Jetty Road, Largs Bay.

In February 1939 Marguerite was granted a divorce and at the time John was living in Thomas Avenue, Newstead.

John died on the 12th of May 1962 and was buried in the Stirling Cemetery the following day; General, Section F, Plot 760N.

Military

At the age of 29, John enlisted into the 1st AIF on the 27th of May 1918 in Pt Pirie and allotted the service number 62170 and posted to B Company, 2nd Depot Battalion.
He listed his mother, Mrs Blanche Haynes, of Birkenhead, England, as his next of kin.

On the 3rd of July he was transferred to A Company and then on the 31st of July he was transferred to the 4th General Reinforcements in Mitcham Camp.

John embarked from Adelaide on board SS Gaika on the 6th of August 1918, disembarked in London on the 13th of October and marched into the 9th Training Battalion in Fovant and allotted to the 43rd Battalion.

He proceeded to France on the 22nd of January 1919 and marched into the Australian Infantry Base Depot (AIBD) 3 days later.

On the 12th of April he was transferred to No.1 Base Depot in Le Havre.
He remained here until the 6th of June 1919 when he embarked for England and marched into No.2 Camp in Sutton Veny.

John embarked from England on board HT Ulysses on the 22nd of July 1919, disembarking in Adelaide on the 30th of August.

John was discharged from the AIF on the 16th of September 1919 and awarded the British War Medal.
