John Bartrop was born in Echuca, Victoria, and was working with his father on the family farm near Gisborne when he enlisted on 23/2 1916.He sailed on 3/7/1916 as part of the 8th Battalion.

He was wounded on 4/10/1917 during the Battle of Broodseinde, south of Passchendaele.

He returned to Australia and was discharged on 24/7/1918.
