Youngest of three brothers who served in WWI, Private John Alexander Winter (Service No:7467) enlisted in the AIF on 23 January 1917, and was attached to 11th Infantry Battalion when he embarked with his Unit on 29 June 1917 from Fremantle for Plymouth on board HMAT A30 Borda for service on the Western Front. Private Winter was WiA in France on 3 June 1918 (GSW to thigh), and embarked from England for Fremantle on 25 January 1919 on board HT Ceramic. Private Winter was attached to 11th Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 21 May 1919. (His father Charles also served with 11th Infantry Battalion).
John was born in Launceston, Tasmania in 1899, third of four children (and youngest son) of Charles Gideon Winter (b1865 in Pembrokeshire, Wales) and Mary Ada (aka Ada) Sleightholm (b1871 in Launceston, Tasmania). Charles immigrated in 1871, arriving with his parents and siblings in Melbourne on board the Stonehouse. The family lived in Warrnambool, Victoria before moving to Launceston, Tasmania. Charles worked as a Bookseller and Farmer in Patersonia, and Ada was School Mistress at Patersonia State School when they married in 1893. In late 1899 Charles and Ada took their sons to Johannesburg, South Africa for 'business purposes and to fight in the Boer War' (Trove; Obituary 1950) - Charles' younger brrother William was living in Johannesburg with his family. Following the birth of their fourth child (and only daughter, Frances) in Johannesburg in 1906, Charles and Ada returned with their family to Australia, settling in Western Australia where Charles was a Farmer and Orchardiist in Kellerberrin. Charles served in the AIF in WWI (Corporal; Service No:7588) and following his Discharge, he and Ada lived in Perth where Charles worked as a Clerk, before moving to Cookernup - Charles was a Farmer and Orchardist. In the 1930s Charles and Ada moved to Busselton, where Charles worked for the Agricultural Bank as a Supervisor with the Group Settlement Scheme.
John was working at Nangeenan via Merredin in 1917 when he enlisted in the AIF. Following his Discharge in 1919, he joined the Public Service as a Customs Officer based at Cottesloe Beach, Fremantle and in 1923 in Perth married married Mabel Phyllis Carse (b1898 in Perth, Western Australia). John and Mabel settled in Subiaco, Perth where they raised their family and John worked with the Customs Department as a Supervisor. Mabel died in 1980 and John in 1986.
