Michael was a 1st intake National Service man who completed his recruit training at 2 Recruit Training Battalion. He was then posted to 7 Platoon, C Company, 5 RAR to receive his Infantry training. Michael was then transferred to the Signals Platoon, Support Company. He deployed to Vietnam on 28 April 1967 and remained with signals for the full 1966-67 tour. Michael returned to Australia aboard HMAS Sydney, docking on 12 May 1967.
