Great Sydney Central Station Honour Board

John Herbert CORRIGAN, (Service Number 6248) was born on 14 January 1886 at Wellington. He began work as a call boy at the locomotive depot in his hometown on 28 April 1901, and by August had progressed to cleaner, and then fireman by 1908. He had a brief return to cleaner in the middle of that year, but by 1912 had become a driver. This was the rank he held when he was granted leave to join the Expeditionary Forces on 11 May 1916. At that time, he was not married.

John Herbert CORRIGAN, (Service Number 6248) was born on 14th January 1886 at Wellington, NSW. He began work as a call boy at the locomotive depot in Wellington on 28th April 1901. By August he had progressed to cleaner, and then fireman by 1908. He had a brief return to cleaner in the middle of that year, but by 1912 had become a driver.  This was the rank he held when he was granted leave to join the Expeditionary Forces on 11th May 1916. At that time, he was not married.

He left Australia from Sydney aboard HMAT ‘Euripides’ on 9th September 1916 and reached Plymouth (England) on 26th October. He went to France on 4th February 1917 and joined the 3rd Australian Infantry Battalion.

He received severe gunshot wounds to his chest on 4th May and was admitted to the 6th General Hospital at Rouen. He caught pneumonia and he died of his wounds at 5.15 pm. on 20th May.

He was buried in the St. Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen.

His widowed mother, Kate was awarded a pension of £2 per fortnight.
