George Gordon Edward Higgison enlisted in Brisbane under the surname Higgerson. He later signed a statuary declaration stating his surname was Higgison. Higgison, serving with the 4th Pioneer Battalion AIF was severely wounded by a high explosive shell on the 29 September 1917, and his right leg was soon after amputated. He was returned to Australia during January 1918.
By this time his two brothers, 3485 Pte. Sydney Percy Higgison 53rd Battalion AIF had been killed in action at Fromelles 19 July 1916, and 6991 Pte. Arthur Ernest John Higgison 2nd Battalion AIF, was killed in action in Belgium, 22 September 1917, aged 38.
