Biography

Herbert was born in Panmure in 1896  to James Thomas Unwin and Mary Cockman (nee Fidler)   He died in 1965

Brother of Edmund(Edward) James Unwin who returned to Australia on 5 July 1918 having served with the 14th Battalion; Charles William Unwin who return to Australia on 4 February 1919 having served with the 8th Battalion and Thomas Henry Unwin who was killed in action on 23 March 1917 while serving with the 29th Battalion. He is buried in the Beaumetz Cross Roads Cemetery, Row C, Grave 5

1 March 1916 - enlisted with the 44th Battalion with the rank of Private

14 February 1917 - transferred to the 58th Battalion

25 September 1917 - wounded. Shell wound to the right thigh. Transferred to England on 10 Ocotber 1917

8 August 1918 - wounded, Second occasion. Wounds to the head and shoulder

Commenced return to Australia on 15 May 1919 aboard HT Orontes disembarking on 28 June 1919

Medals: British War Medal, Victory Medal

7 August 1919 - discharged at the 3rd Military District
