William Baxter was born in London, England. He then came to Australia where he married his wife, Georgina Baxter. He lived at 7 Percy Court, South Australia where he worked as a labourer.
William Baxter enlisted on the 28th of August, 1915. He embarked on the 24th of November, 1915, on the A59 Botanist, aged 35.
He was awarded the military medal for conspicuous bravery on the 7th of August, 1916, at Sausage Valley, France. His Battery was shelled out while William Baxter carried man to safety under heavy fire from the enemy. He returned straight after and then dug out two Sergeants who were buried under the ground. He also helped recover the bodies of four men who died at the scene.
William Baxter was returned to Australia on the 21st of March, 1919.
