'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He led his platoon with great skill and determination, capturing an enemy strong point, which he reorganized and held. He afterwards did most valuable work in extending his battalion fron and in leading a reconnoitring patrol into the enemy's country.'

Biography

Alexander Roxburgh MUIR was born on 1st March, 1895 in Homebush, Sydney NSW

His parents were John Paton MUIR and Jeanie Paton NEIL who married on 27th November 1889 in Fieldhouse, Blackburn, Victoria - they were both from Glasgow in Scotland

He had previous service with the Militia for 2 years before enlisting with the Australian Army on 14th September, 1915 - he was with the 1st Battalion, 14th Reinforcements - Unit embarked from Sydney on board RMS Osterley on 15th January, 1916

Alexander was awarded a Miliary Cross for bravery at the Battle of Messines 7-10 June, 1917

He was Killed in Action at Zonnebeke on 13th October, 1917 by an enemy projectile - he is honoured on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial and the Australian War Memorial

In addition to the Military Cross he was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
