In 1923 AIF soldier Hugh Whitten who was disable during the Great War had a fasinating little shop in Carlton Street off Lower Regency Street were he sold peasant pottery, painted toys and other craft works. He had a surprise visit to the shop by the Queen doing some christmas shopping bought many pairs of bedroom slippers, powder boxes, painted wooden toys and prettily decorated guests timetables. She took them home with her feeling that it was too much trouble for him to deliver or send them on. Other members of the Royal family have visited the shop. The Queen of Spain and her daughter and Lady Patricia Ramsey have also been customers.
