" Dalton left Australia with me in the 16th reinforcements to 18th battalion AIF in October 1916, His initals were W.E. He was working in a store like Nock and Kirby he had a pal called Bob Wilson who also went away with us. Dalton 5,6 5,7 medium complexion and build. We joined up "C" Company of the 18th battalion AIF, and he was in C company 1st platoon with me. He was right alongside me in a " Hop over" at Bullecourt on the 3.5.17 I was an acting corporal and was his N.C.O. A piece of shell struck him, and kileld him instanley I saw him fall. and am quite certain that he was killed outright and didnt suffer. He and I were rather pals and he was going under me to England as i was his corporal of his section. 5792 was his number. and i have details about him in my roll book at home, I was wounded later on in the day, and do not know where he was buried, he was killed about 9.AM. the position he fell was evenutally helf after 5 counter attacks some of which traversed on where he fell"- F W Taylor 18th battalion c company 1st platoon, from the AWM
