7th Earl Nelson
Henry Edward Joseph Horatio Nelson, 7th Earl Nelson (22 April 1894 – 8 August 1972) was born in Northampton, England, the son of The Hon. Edward Agar Horatio Nelson (who later succeeded as The 5th Earl Nelson in September 1948) and Geraldine (née Cave). He was educated at Downside School and Maredsous Abbey in Belgium.
Between 1909 and 1911 he was a cadet at HMS Conway, the naval training school on the River Mersey at Liverpool.
It is unclear how he found his way to Australia, but when war was declared in 1914 he immediately enlisted and served with the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force in securing German colonial possessions in the Pacific.
Two of his brother also served with the A.I.F during World War I - Albert (the 6th Earl Nelson) as 890 Corporal Albert Horace Nelson with the 13th Battalion and Charles under an alias as 527 Private Joseph Cooke with the 20th Battalion.
During the Second World War, Henry Nelson gained the rank of Major in the Indian Army.
He inherited the earldom in June 1957 on the death of his older brother, Albert Francis Joseph Horatio Nelson, the 6th Earl Nelson who had no issue.
Henry Nelson never married. After spending time in Ceylon as a tea planter, he moved to the island of Madeira, Portugal and established a tea plantation. On his death at his home at Santa Cruz, Spain in 1972 the title passed to his younger brother, George Nelson, who became the 8th Earl Nelson.
