From How We Served

176 Private Francis Samuel Dean of North Carlton, Victoria had been employed as a butcher prior to enlisting for War Service on the 19th of March 1915 at the age of 19.

Allocated to the 24th Battalion, 1st AIF, Frank embarked for Egypt and further training on the 8th of May, but due to his age and health he was held back with Training Battalions, before being shipped to England on the 11th of June.

Following further training. Frank was sent over to France and entered camp at 'The Bull Ring' Etaples, on the 27th of July for his final phase of training before joining his Unit in the trenches in the vicinity of Pozieres, where he was formally taken on strength with his Battalion on the 5th of August.

The day following Frank's arrival, on the 6th of August 1916, with the 24th Battalion committed to the capture of Pozieres, Frank was officially cited as 'Killed in Action'. He was aged 20 at the time of his death.

Private Dean had been in the trenches for less than one day. Frank received a hasty temporary field burial, and following the end of the War, the Graves Registration Unit was able to locate Frank's original place of burial and he was exhumed and officially reinterred in the Pozieres British Cemetery Ovillers-La Boisselle, Pozieres, Picardie, France.

Frank's supreme sacrifice made during 'The Great War' was to be privately commemorated at the Dean family's collective burial site within Melbourne General Cemetery, Victoria.
