Malcolm McLeod McKINNON was born on 21st September 1886 at Tent Hill, which is near Emmaville in the New England District of NSW. His parents were Angus and Clara Prudence McKinnon. On 29th August 1914 he joined the NSW Government Railways and Tramways as a tram conductor (casual) in Sydney. On 4th August 1915 he was released from duty to join the Expeditionary Forces.

Officially, Malcolm joined the AIF on 4th August 1915, with the rank of Private (Service Number 3185). He was initially posted to the 7th Reinforcements to the 19th Infantry Battalion. He nominated his father as his next of kin. When he enlisted, he was living at Enfield in Sydney, but his parents were still living at Tent Hill.

He left Sydney on 23rd December 1915. On 14th February 1916 he was taken on strength of the 4th Infantry Battalion at Tel-el-Kebir in Egypt. On 23rd March 1916 he embarked at Alexandria for France, and the Western Front.

On 17th May 1916 he was killed in action at Fleurbaix. From depositions in his Red Cross Enquiry File, he was killed by a stray bullet which passed through or between the sandbags lining the trench he was in and struck him in the chest just below his right shoulder.

His grave is in Rue-Petillon Military Cemetery, Fleurbaix, Bethune, Nord Pas de Calais, France. His place of association is Tent Hill, NSW.

After his death his mother was awarded a pension of 27 shillings and 6 pence per fortnight, with effect from 1st August 1916.
