Robert was the son of Alex and Alice May Sutherland of Dignams Creek, via Bega, New South Wales. Known as ‘Bob’ Sutherland he was only 17 years and four months of age when he enlisted in 1916.
His older brother, Second Lieutenant William Sutherland 13th Battalion AIF was killed in action at Gallipoli 21 August 1915, aged 27.
Another older brother, 61 Driver James Alisine Sutherland 1st Battalion AIF, an original member of the unit, was killed in action when struck by a shell at Hell Fire Corner on the Menin Road in Belgium, 18th September 1917, aged 25.
Bob Sutherland was twice wounded with the 45th Battalion during 1917 and returned to Australia during February 1919.
