Son of Thomas Varley and Mary Ann Varley nee Hewitt of 'Box Grove', Horsham, Victoria. Brother of Alfred Alexander Varley MSM who returned to Australia on 2 December 1918 having served with the 60th Battalion

Commenced return to Australia on 24 September 1918 from Taranto, Italy aboard HT Kaiser-i-Hind then transhipped aboard HT Devon disembarking on 23 November 1918

During 1923c Ernest married Florence May Fulton in Victoria
