70 years ago today, on the 9th November 1955, Corporal George Matthew Pirie, 17th Imperial Camel Corps (Reg No-1929), labourer from Laidlaw Street, Boggabri, New South Wales and Broadmeadow, N.S.W., father of 4 or more - (Gordon, born 28.5.1916, Manilla, N.S.W., died 29.5.1916, Manilla, N.S.W., a Bud in Heaven - http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article193572857, Donald G, born 1919, Manilla, N.S.W., Dorothy M, born 1921, Manilla, N.S.W., Daphne C, born 1924, Manilla, N.S.W.), was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 63. ANGLICAN 3-196. 34.
Born at Muswellbrook, New South Wales on the 23rd February 1892 to Andrew, died 20.6.1919, Manilla Hospital, N.S.W., age 55, buried in the Presbyterian portion of Manilla General Cemetery, not located on Find a Grave, from Rowan Street, Manilla, N.S.W., and Eliza Jane Pirie, died 28.7.1899, Muswellbrook, N.S.W., age?, from Edenglassie?, N.S.W., not located on Find a Grave; husband of Beatrice Lavina Pirie nee Hatch, married 2.12.1915, Manilla, N.S.W., died 17.5.1968, Concord Repatriation General Hospital, N.S.W., age 71, late of Narara, N.S.W., sleeping here, George enlisted on the 8th August 1915 with the 6th Australian Light Horse Regiment at Armidale, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A60 Aeneas on the 20th December 1915.
Wounded in action - 4.12.1917 (GSW right buttock, pelvis, seriously ill).
Transferred to Cairo 7.12.1917.
Commenced return to Australia 15.2.1918.
George arrived home on the 18th March 1918, being discharged medically unfit on the 18th September 1918.
Mr. Pirie’s name has been inscribed on the Manilla and District Soldiers Memorial Hall and Honor Rolls, Manilla Patriotic Football Club's Great War Roll of Honour and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.
I have placed poppies at George’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
Service record states Died after Discharge, 7/11/1955.

Older brother Andrew James Pirie M.I.D., born 19.12.1890, Cootamundra, New South Wales, single chauffeur from 'Belltrees', Scone, N.S.W., enlisted 27.7.1915, Newcastle, N.S.W., 30th Battalion, Reg No-1822, promoted to 2nd Lieutenant 31.8.1917, transferred to 45th Battalion 21.9.1917, wounded in action - 2.4.1918 (GSW right thigh, mild), promoted to Lieutenant 12.4.1918, Mention in Despatches 30.1.1919, RTA 5.7.1919, died 1956?, not officially commemorated.
