Prior to coming to Australia James had served in the Royal Navy as a stoker for four years.

Next of kin given as his aunt of  Mary Jane Corlett, Dundrum, Ireland.

Commenced return to Australia on 8 May 1916 aboard HT Themistocles disembarking on 12 July 1916
